Bar Ditch – The man-made ditch that runs along the side of a rural road. It is called a ‘bar ditch’ because this ditch was created by ‘barrowing’ dirt from the side of the road in order to create the arch or hump in the center of the road. This arch in the road is used to move rain water out of the road to prevent flooding and preserve the life of the roadway.
Point of clarification: The name ‘Bar Ditch’ has nothing to do with drinking establishments or drunkards being thrown out into it.
