Category: Preparedness

Emergency preparedness is about preparing in advance and gaining the ability to survive on your own, without outside assistance, for a period of time after a major event such as job loss, long-term illness, a massive storm / natural disaster, pandemic, or a terrorist attack.  Full preparedness includes sustainable food and water for long-term and short-term, medical supplies, tools for making repairs and the knowledge to use them, a family safety and evacuation plan with a meeting place, and emergency contacts.

A lot of people go about their daily routines not ever thinking “what if something were to change”. A lot of people simply focus on the things that they need to do today, or this week, maybe plan for the family vacation, all the while just assuming that their daily routine will not change… Assuming that their job and income will keep coming in… Assuming that the world revolves around them and that cannot be disrupted.  This is not a good way to live.

A wise person will think beyond the immediate future, they will think beyond their daily routine and consider the possible variables… What would you do if the freeway or that bridge that you cross every day gets closed down today and you need to find another way home from work… are you familiar with alternate routes? What if you get stuck at the office… do you have food on hand or are you dependent on the office cafeteria or local restaurants? Or would you have to rely on the vending machine? What if that incoming storm ends up being a lot heavier than expected? Do you have enough supplies to sustain your family if you are unable to get to a store for a week or longer?  Do you have alternate forms of entertainment in case the electricity does out for an extended period of time?  These are all things that should be considered and planned for.  Preparing will not only help you and your family to not only survive, but also thrive during an emergency or an unexpected  disruption to your daily life.
